We are a wonderful new off-Broadway theater in the heart of Manhattan.
Let me introduce you to AMT Theater. This beautiful new off-Broadway theater in the heart of Manhattan is the brainchild of Al Tapper and Tony Sportiello. These two go way back in this theater world with their first collaboration being in 2003 when they started to develop their critically acclaimed musical, Sessions. Since then they have gone from strenth to strength culminating in opening AMT Theater.
In Tony's words, because he says it best: AMT has basically two goals. One is to move a show onto Broadway - not because Broadway is the absolute definitive mark of excellence in theater, but because if you're a professional, you want to be at the top. You want to be in the World Series, the Super Bowl, you want to win an Academy Award. It gives you something to strive for and it pushes you to extraordinary lengths. So yes, we want to move a show onto Broadway, but we also want something perhaps even more significant. Our second goal is to make a difference in people's lives. We want to do new shows, to encourage new writers and directors; to do children's shows, which get young people involved at an early age. Another aim is to work with other professionals outside of the country, like our spectacular successes with acclaimed director Mauricio Cedeno and the amazing artists of Guadalajara, Mexico. We also want to do cabaret because, well, it's just fun. AMT will serve as a regional theater to the people in our immediate area, to draw on their energy and solicit their opinions, because without our audience, we are nothing. So please come with us on this magical carpet ride and let's see where it takes us.
We recently became a not for profit organization, which is great, we are actively looking for grants to apply for as well as projects to start and support. We truly want our theater to benefit everyone in the arts and be a home for creativity. We have some super ideas in the works, so stay tuned for more information.
Upcoming works at AMT Theater
Our NEW PLAY READING SERIES continues in August, where we will present three new plays read by professional actors. This invaluable series is at the heart of everything we do here at AMT. It's the heart of everything theater is, as it allows playwrights the chance to watch their work come alive, free of cost for them. Details are 8, 9, 10 August, doors open 6:30pm. Each new playwright we listen to could turn out to be the next August Wilson, Paula Vogel, or Tennessee Williams. Supporting and promoting their work benefits all of us, as they are the storytellers of the future.
In September of 2023 we will present Bettinger's Luggage, a charming and poignant slice of life story of a Jewish family struggling in the early 1970s on the lower east side of New York. This original tale by Al Tapper is based on a true story and is directed by Steven Ditmyer, opening September 19th 2023.
We can't do this without you
